"Da gibt es in jedem Kulturland Hunderte von produzierenden Mathematikern, von denen jeder nur eine ganz kleine Ecke seiner Wissenschaft beherrscht, die ihm dann begreiflicherweise an Wichtigkeit alles andere zu überragen scheint. Die Früchte seiner Arbeit publiziert er in abgerissenen Einzelaufsätzen in mehreren, womöglich verschiedensprachigen, weitverstreuten Zeitschriften. Die Darstellung, nur für wenige Spezialkollegen berechnet, enthält sich jeder Andeutung eines Zusammenhangs mit größeren allgemeinen Fragen und ist dadurch vielleicht schon einem etwas anderweitig interessierten Kollegen schwer zugänglich, einem größeren Kreise aber gänzlich ungenießbar."
