Research

There will be some resource “dark area” in a mobile communication system after disaster occurs. The damages caused by disaster will reduce the availability of resources and lead to dramatic changes to the network topology, either by making part of the devices function abnormally or by forcing some devices quit from the system and the service entirely.The lack of knowledge about current status of available resources after a disaster becomes a main obstacle for rescuers or system administrators to act effectively and efficiently.

Building a resource map using self-organization techniques (data-harvesting and data fusion) can increase the chances of making correct decisions to recover the system, and is promising in solving this problem. If one has the guidance from the map about where and how certain part of the system functions, there will be better chance to assign repairing tasks and allocate new resources to recover.  In designing mechanisms for generating and maintaining accuracy of the map, we face several challenges:  on the one hand, the storage and the generation technique themselves should tolerant the changes and damages caused by disaster; and on the other hand, there are special design requirements in disaster scenario to meet, for instance, the time constraints, and the resource limitations; thus it is necessary to prioritize and trade-off different design aims.

This topic belongs to information management and has a close relation with the other topics in the graduate school. It is based on distributed and self-organization data storage and management mechanism (Elizabeth Ribe-Baumann); and it involves cross-layer design concept, a close cooperation with networking research group including service placement (Christian Brosch), node location (Markus Brückner, Tatsiana Ulazniuk);  and this topic will provide a global view by fusion and harvesting local resources information, thus very broad chances of working together with radio group and other working groups.
