I was born in Suhl, Germany in 1982. In July 2009 I received a Diploma (M.Sc.) in Computer Science from the Ilmenau University of Technology, Germany. Since August 2009 I am a Ph.D. student at the Database and Information Systems group at the Faculty of Computer Science and Automation of the Ilmenau University of Technology, Germany.

[Abstract]

Motion sensing input devices like Microsoft�s Kinect offer an alternative to traditional computer input devices like keyboards and mouses. Daily new applications using this interface appear. Most of them implement their own gesture detection. In our demonstration we show a new approach using the data stream engine AnduIN. The gesture detection is done based on AnduIN�s complex event processing functionality. This way we build a system that allows to define new and complex gestures on the basis of a declarative programming interface. On this basis our demonstration data3 provides a basic natural interaction OLAP interface for a sample star schema database using Microsoft�s Kinect.

[Abstract]

Over the last few years cloud computing has received great attention in the research community. Customers are entitled to rent infrastructure, storage, and even software in form of services. This way they just have to pay for the actual use of these components or services. Cloud computing also comes with great opportunities for distributed design applications, which often require multiple users to work cooperatively on shared data. In order to enable cooperation, strict consistency is necessary. However, cloud storage services often provide only eventual consistency. In this paper, we propose a system that allows for strict consistent and cooperative XML authoring in distributed environments based on Amazon S3. Our solution makes use of local and distributed transactions, which are synchronized in an optimistic fashion, in order to ensure correctness. An important contribution of this paper is the evaluation of our system in a real deployment scenario upon Amazon S3. We show the strong impact of write operations to S3 on the transaction throughput. Furthermore, we show that fragmenting data increases write performance and reduces storage costs.

[Abstract]

Flash devices (solid state disks) promise a significant performance improvement for disk-based database processing. However, database storage structures and processing strategies originally designed for magnetic disks prevent the optimal utilization of SSDs. Based on previous work on bench-marking SSDs and a detailed discussion of I/O methods, in this paper, we analyze appropriate execution methods for database processing as well as important parameters and boundaries and present a tool which helps to derive these parameters.

[Abstract]

Die Optimierung des physischen Designs gro�er Datenbanken, wie sie in Data Warehouses vorliegen, stellt eine M�glichkeit dar, die Anfragemenge zu beschleunigen. Durch die t�glich wachsende Datenmenge gewinnen autonome Ans�tze dieser Optimierungsprozesse mehr und mehr an Bedeutung, bis zu dem Punkt an dem sie sogar notwendig werden. Speziell f�r OLAP Anwendungen zielen die Optimierungsschritte darauf ab, den Lesezugriff auf die Daten zu beschleunigen. Die Arbeit stellt ein Framework zur Generierung und Evaluierung alternativer Sortierreihenfolgen f�r Dimensionstabellen und damit verbundenen Cluster Trees zur Verf�gung. Alternative Sortierungen beeinflussen die Zugriffsm�glichkeiten auf Daten innerhalb des Systems und stellen somit eine M�glichkeit dar, Anfragemengen signifikant zu beschleunigen. F�r eine geclusterete Speicherung der Daten bieten alternative Sortierungen zus�tzlich die M�glichkeit eines beschleunigten Zugriffs, der insbesondere bei Join Operationen zum Tragen kommt. Als Grundlage dieser Arbeit dienen MDX Anfragen, welche auf dem X100 Backend ausgef�hrt werden. Dabei wird die plangetriebene Auswahl von Schemaobjekten auf bereits in X100 Algebra �bersetzten Anfragen ausgef�hrt. F�r ein so gefundenes Schemaobjekt wird ein Nutzen auf Basis von Statistiken aus der Ausf�hrung der Anfrage bestimmt, welche f�r die Erzeugung des Objektes verantwortlich war. Somit ergibt sich ein Framework f�r eine automatisierte Optimierung des Designs.
