INHALTE

F.A.Q.

Application

  1. Which are the conditions for applying for the Master's programme?

You will find a list and explanations concerning the general formal and the specific technical requirements here.

  2. What are the deadlines for application?

You should apply for your studies right in time. The visa formalities, which have to be considered by almost all applicants, might require about three months. Therefore, we suggest all students not living in Germany yet applying by 15 April (for the winter semester starting in October) and 15 October (for the summer semester starting in April).

Application Papers

1. Should all documents be authenticated or translated?

The copies of all documents should be authenticated e.g. by your university and translated into English or German. The transcription of grades will be performed at TU Ilmenau.

2. What should a letter of motivation include?

The letter of motivation should outline your personal motivation and how you want to contribute to the programme. The best approach is to tell us about your vision of the future and about your professional development. We are interested in your personality and the answers to the following questions:

  • In what research topic are you interested?
  • What professional goals motivate you?
  • What talents do you have and what are your areas of expertise in communication and media research (in particular research methods)?
  • What skills have you developed while working in the field of communication and media?
  • Why do you want to enroll in the Media and Communication Science (Medien- und Kommunikationswissenschaft) master's programme at Ilmenau University of Technology?
  • How is your interdisciplinary academic background?
  • What is your attitude to interdisciplinary research?
  • What international experience do you have (studies, internship abroad)?

3. What should be included in the brief exposé?

In your exposé we want you to propose a smaller scaled research project (e.g, for writing a master thesis). In this exposé you should include: research questions and goals as well as relevance of the proposed study, state of research and theoretical background (citing timely academic literature on the topic), suggestions for the empirical research design/method to study the research question, an outline of expected results/potential implications, and discussion. 2-3 pages.

4. What are the application papers?

You will find a list with the requested application papers here.

5. To which address should I send my application papers?

www.tu-ilmenau.de/apply

6. Is it possible to send some of my most important documents (copies of my degrees, my resume, etc.) directly to the IfMK in order to get a preliminary answer on my eligibility for the Master?

No. Sending documents to IfMK is not helpful, because we cannot decide on your admission. This is in the responsibility of an aptitude assessment committee. They will review your documents in order to get an impression of your skills and personality. Only the committee can decide on your admission.

7. Are letters of recommendation needed?

No. You do not need to submit any letter of recommendation.

As proof for English language proficiency, officially are accepted:

  2. What is the minimum score of the English language?

    http://www.tu-ilmenau.de/en/international/degree-students/master/courses-offered/

  3. Do I need a proof of German language proficiency?

For your application a proof for German language proficiency is not obligatory. But you should take the chance to acquire the German language not only to cope with your everyday life but also for your personal prosperity. Please recognise the requirements of DAAD, if you apply for a scholarship of DAAD. The applications for the Master's programme and for DAAD scholarship must be considered independently.

  4. Is it possible to study the Master's programme completely in English?

Yes, it is possible to attend the Master's programme completely in English. This means that the examinations and the degree can be taken completely in English. Simply the options of the different modules are limited, because some of the courses are offered only in German.
