Since March 1, 2012 Prof. Dr. Löffelholz is president of the Swiss German University (SGU) in Jakarta, Indonesia. For his first term of service he took a sabbatical with permission of the State of Thuringia. In the meantime Dr. Andreas Schwarz is the managing chair of the department. 

Prof. Löffelholt still serves as director of the International Research Group on Crisis Communicatiopn. He also continues to supervise several doctoral theses at Ilmenau University of Technology. More information on the SGU can be obtained at: http://www.sgu.ac.id

Biographical Sketch

Martin Löffelholz is Professor in Communication and Media Studies and head of the Department of Media Studies at the Institute of Media and Communication Science of Ilmenau University of Techno­lo­gy (Germany), where he has taught since 1998. Furthermore, he serves as the academic director of the International Crisis Communication Research Group and as the chair of newly founded Network Intercultural and International Communication. From 1997 to 2000, he was the chair of the Journalism Research Division of the German Communication Association.

Professor Löffelholz is author of Politics in the System of Science: Planning and Imple­men­ta­tion of Aca­de­mic Jour­na­lism Education (1989) and co-author of The Future of Jour­na­lism (1994), Trends of the In­for­­mation Society (1995) and Jour­na­lism Education in Pa­ki­stan (1996). He is editor of War as Media Event (1993), Theories of Journalism (2000), War as Media Event II (2004), Theories of Journalism 2nd edition (2004) and co-editor of On­line-Jour­nalism (2000), Media - Military - Politics (2002), Basic Texts of Trans-cultural Communication (2002), The new Science of Communication (2003), Global Journalism Research (2008), and Handbook of War and Crisis Coverage (2008). He has published more than 120 articles and book chapters on journalism education, trends of journalism, journalism theories, crisis and war communication, cross-cultural communication, and political communication. Moreover, he has presented approximately 110 papers (invited or peer-reviewed) at conferences around the globe. Martin Löffelholz has published in English, German, Arabic and Indonesian.

He earned his Ph.D. in communication research and political science from the University of Münster in 1988, after working as an editor on daily newspapers, the German Press Agency (dpa) and as tele­vi­sion and radio reporter on Westdeutscher Rundfunk (Cologne). Since 1988, he has worked and taught at several universities in Germany (Münster, Hamburg, Leip­zig) and as a visiting professor in Indonesia (2000 and 2001) and the Philippines (2004) mainly in the areas of journalism theories, journalism education, cross-cultural commu­ni­ca­tion and cri­sis and war communication. Professor Löffelholz has lectured on these topics in Australia, Austria, Bos­nia, Canada, France, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Mongolia, Oman, Pakistan, Philippines, Romania, Senegal, South Africa, United Arab Emirates, and the U.S.A.

Research

In seinen Forschungsarbeiten beschäftigt sich Martin Löffelholz seit mehr als 15 Jahren mit Journalismus, Öffentlichkeitsarbeit, Krisen- und Kriegskommunikation,(sicherheits-)politischer Kommunikation, interkultureller Kommunikation sowie Medieninnovationen.
