Release of an Open Source Software Package for Fluorescence Lifetime Analysis

Publication of researchers of the Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Informatics in the journal PLoS ONE

Researchers of the Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Informatics could present their new software package called FLIM eXplorer (FLIMX) in the well-known online journal Public Library of Science – PLOS ONE. The main application of FLIMX lies in fluorescence lifetime imaging ophthalmoscopy (FLIO), which is a new technique for the in vivo measurement of the time-resolved autofluorescence of the human eye. FLIMX is also able to analyze other time-resolved fluorescence data, e.g. from fluorescence microscopy. The paper describes adaptive binning, which is a new approach to pre-process time-resolved fluorescence data, and expands existing decay models (multi-exponential, stretched exponential, spectral global analysis, incomplete decay) to account for the layered structure of the eye and to correct for the influence of the crystalline lens fluorescence on the retina fluorescence. Further on, methods for statistical analysis based on fluorescence lifetime and sophisticated visualization capabilities are presented in examples. The paper  is freely available.

FLIMX can be obtained under the open source BSD–license from here. FLIMX is implemented in MATLAB and possesses a graphical user interface (GUI). A user guide is also available. FLIMX required MATLAB 2013b or newer.
