You can come to Ilmenau by train. There is an ICE train running as far as Erfurt, the capital of Thuringia, from where you can use the connecting train to Ilmenau. The trip from Erfurt to Ilmenau takes about an hour. Of course, you may also wish to take a taxi or rent a car for covering the distance of about 50 km on the motorway.
by airplane
We would like to recommend you to go to Frankfurt/Main (FRA) or Leipzig (LEJ), or also to Berlin (TXL or SXF). There is an ICE train connection from all of these airports to Erfurt. The trip from Leipzig/Halle takes about 1.5 hrs, from Berlin about 3.5 hrs, and from Frankfurt about 3 hrs. The connecting train from Erfurt to Ilmenau takes about an hour
