GeMiC 2012 general information

GeMiC 2012: The 7th German Microwave Conference was held at Ilmenau University of Technology, Germany, from March 12 until 14, 2012. As for the six previous editions, the conference was organised under the responsibility of the German Institute for Microwave and Antenna Technologies (IMA) in association with the German Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies (VDE) and the European Microwave Association (EuMA).

GeMiC 2012 provided, through its presentations, keynotes and industrial notes, workshops, and forums, unique opportunities to exchange scientific and technical information, to establish and foster collaboration and cooperation in the microwave domain, and to promote young engineering researchers, both at German and international levels.

The motto of the conference was “Meet your expectations”, as further detailed in the welcome message (see conference booklet).

GeMiC 2012 in numbers

Out of 140 paper submissions addressing 11 topical fields of major relevance for the microwave community, 100 papers were selected from a rigorous peer-review (four reports per paper). The accepted contributions were arranged in 18 scientific sessions (83 oral, 17 posters), with a maximum of three parallel tracks.

Three highly renowned experts delivered keynotes on relevant microwave and antenna research areas, reaching from fundamental concepts to industrial applications: Prof. Stefano Maci (Univ. of Siena, Italy) on “Metasurfing: a new approach to the design of artificial-surface devices”, Dr. Tomas Palacios (IEEE MTT Distinguished Microwaver Lecturer, MIT, Cambridge, USA) on “Graphen-based RF electronics”, and Dr. Frederic Villain (NXP, France) on “The challenges of cognitive radio”.

A total of 8 scientific and technical workshops and 2 industrial notes formed further parts of the conference program, covering topics like high-precision microwave measurements, RF-MEMS design and simulation, Ka-band satellite communications, and cognitive radio. 18 academic and industrial institutions contributed to a lively industrial forum, creating an informal atmosphere for discussion, shaping ideas, and creating new partnerships.

More than 215 participants from 20 countries from all over the world registered for the conference, marking a new record number of attendees. Two carefully selected social events let the conference attendees taste the charming natural and cultural environment of Thuringia.

GeMiC 2012 awarded 3 prizes for the two best conference papers, which were evaluated by an experienced award committee, and for the winner of the student and young engineer design competition, devoted to high-power amplifiers. The awards, worth 1,000 EUR each, were sponsored by IMA and EuMA.

GeMiC 2012 acknowledgments

The General Chair of the conference wishes to express his sincere appreciation to all GeMiC authors, the nearly 100 members of the Review Board, the Conference Organisation at Ilmenau University of Technology, the Local Organising Team of the RF&Microwave Research Lab (Hendrik Bayer, Kurt Blau, Michael Huhn, Stefan Humbla, Alexander Krauß, Ralf Stephan, Johannes Trabert, Matthias Zocher), and the generous financial or technical support from Agilent, Anritsu, Ansys, Astrium, BSW, Cassidian, Coventor, CST, Fraunhofer IIS, Funkwerke Kölleda, IEEE German AP/MTT Chapter, International Graduate School on Mobile Communications, Kayser-Threde, Medav, Mician, Rohde & Schwarz, Spinner, Tesat Spacecom, and XFAB.

Without such a tremendous support, GeMiC 2012 would definitely not have been able to “meet your expectations”.

All of us from the local organising team thank you very much for your visit and interest in GeMiC 2012 at Ilmenau University of Technology. We are looking forward to meeting you at forthcoming events like the European Microwave Week in Nuremberg or the GeMiC 2014 at Aachen University (RWTH).
