Optical Microsystems and Green Photonics

Optical Microsystems can be defined as complex systems combining optical with mechanical, electrical, and housing functionality in a monolithic device. Based on micro- and nanotechnologies, they profit from cost effective production and a small size allowing their integration in next generation devices of all kinds. Featuring sensing and actuation functions, Optical Microsystems are perfectly suited for various fields of application, reaching from consumer electronics and telecommunication to medical applications and biological research, thus being able to improve quality of life.

Research

Our Graduate School focuses on technologies required for building optical systems of complex functionality, thus combining optical with mechanical, fluidic, and electronic features. The research topics within our Graduate School are closely related to the project "Optical Microsystems" (OPTIMI):

  • Multifunctional Silicon-based Detectors
  • Microoptical Accomodation Systems
  • Green Manufacturing - Laser Material Processing
  • Optoflutronics - MST-Toolbox for Multi-Parameter Screening

Multidisciplinarity

To achieve our goals, we have to combine the knowledge of many different disciplines like mechanics, optics, fluidics, electronics, and material sciences. Microsystems Technology has to provide the necessary interfaces as well as production technologies. This requires the academic education of specialists to be not only interdisciplinary but also university-spanning. The Ilmenau University of Technology and the Friedrich Schiller University Jena meet this challenge and combine their expertise in optics and engineering research and education to form the graduate research school on Optical Microsystems Technology (OMITEC).

Internationality

Our graduate school is international and multi-cultural. English is our primary language of communication. Click here for further informations.

Education

Our program is organised to complete the doctoral degree within three years. In order to achieve this goal you will be given access to state-of-the-art laboratories and infrastructure as well as support for workshop and conference attendance. Working in one of our highly motivated teams, led by excellent professors, you will have the opportunity to do independent and interdisciplinary research in one of the most challenging fields of the 21st century. Comprehensive summer and winter schools will further help you to improve your academic, social, and management skills. Several scholarships will allow you to concentrate on your work as a scientist.
