Lukas Ispandriarno

From September 21st until mid of November Dr. Lukas Suryanto Ispandriarno is staying at the Institute of Media and Communication Science as a visiting researcher. He is a senior lecturer at the Department of Communication Science, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Atma Jaya Yogyakarta (UAJY) in Indonesia. He gained his PhD in Communication Science from TU Ilmenau in 2008 with a dissertation entitled ‘Political Communication in Indonesia: An Analysis of Freedom of the Press during Transition Process (1999-2004)’.

During his visit in Ilmenau he is writing a book on Media Ethics, which is sponsored by the Directorate of Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia through a program called Scheme for Academic Mobility and Exchange (SAME). This program also offers scientists to visit Indonesia.

Since May 1999, Indonesia has enjoyed a political transition to democracy in which media has played a significant role in monitoring the government such as the abuse of power and corruption. However, there are many cases showing how media especially television, the most seen media, abandon ethics. Political and economic power has influenced media. Another challenge is social media which plays an important role as a public discussion forum including critics to politicians. However, some cases have indicated how people, especially the youth, are not aware with media ethics.

In preparing the book, Dr. Ispandriarno is supervised by Professor Jeffrey Wimmer. The project is aiming at communication science students but also for media organizations, journalists as well as the Indonesian public.
