If you are planning on spending more than three months in Germany or if required by your visa, you must apply for a residence permit for Germany at the Ausländerbehörde (the government office responsible for foreigners).

Tuesday afternoons are reserved at the Ausländerbehörde for foreign scholars. The appointments are only available from Frau Federwisch, telephone number 69-2005 or from Frau Zellmer, telephone number 69-2006. Your case will not be processed at the Ausländerbehörde without an appointment. Remember to ask for an appointment for each family member!

Please adhere precisely to your appointment and bring the following papers with you:

• your passport
• a current valid lease
• a current Meldebescheinigung (from the Einwohnermeldeamt), which is no more than 7 days old! (If you are applying for a residence permit for the first time, it may be up to 2 months old.)
• proof of adequate financial means of support (for example scholarship award letter or work contract)
• proof of valid health insurance

Please note!

If you are supporting yourself in Germany through employment, then this employment is always the purpose of residency. You need certification from the Federal Employment Office (Arbeitsamt) that an extra work permit is not necessary for this form of employment (academic occupation). In most cases, you will automatically have health insurance through your employer.

Your studies are then considered a secondary aim (“Nebenzweck”), but must be declared starting at the beginning of your residency.
