Preface

Background:

The 8th international Summer School in Biomedical Engineering succeeds a series of summer schools in the past, addressing diverse aspects of bioelectromagnetic signals in the brain, such as clinical and state of the art techniques for measurement, data processing, source reconstruc-tion, brain stimulation, multimodal data integration, and generative modeling.
Often, measured signal merely represent a reduced or distorted mapping of the hidden original sources. Noninvasive techniques that measure brain activity are confronted with this problem that impedes clinical diagnostics and neurocognitive research. The objective of the 8th Interna-tional Summer School in Biomedical Engineering is to provide in depth education and practical exercises on EEG/MEG source reconstruction techniques, covering both theoretical foundations and practical applications. This will include methodological approaches and challenges, meas-urement devices and characteristics, types of underlying theoretic modeling, specifics of data analysis, ability to derive conclusions about neuroscientific meaning. The program contains thematic lectures on data and signals, modeling of the human head – the forward problem, dis-tributed source reconstruction, spatio-temporal and dynamic source models, scanning methods like Beamformers and MUSIC, and connectivity in the source space.

Aims:

The main objective of the International Summer School is to provide in depth education and advanced training on state of the art techniques of bioelectromagnetic source localization by international experts in biomedical engineering. It aims at a thorough understanding of the un-derlying mechanisms and thus will develop a critical view on current applications and possible future developments.

The second important aim of the International Summer School consist in providing contact with both leading experts in the field and other students with similar interests. This way, the meeting will facilitate the exchange of ideas on latest developments and help to build professional net-works.
By completing a scientific project, the students will obtain more detailed knowledge on the topic, learn about unsolved and controversial issues and improve their abilities in the fields of scientific writing and oral presentation.

Thematic Structure:

The following aspects of bioelectromagnetic source reconstruction will be covered in the single symposia:

  • Data and Signals:
    Introduction to the measurement of brain activity
  • Modeling the human head – the forward problem:
    covers the distortion of physiological signals due to diverse head tissues that separate the source and the sensorspace and methods to model the signal flow

  • Distributed source reconstruction:
    introduction of established inverse techniques to estimate signals in the source space based on measurements

  • Spatio-temporal and dynamic source models:
    covers generative models that emulate brain activity and their use in neurocogni-tive brain research

  • Scanning methods: Beamformers and MUSIC:
    reviews and evaluates alternative methods for source reconstruction

  • Connectivity in the source space:
    reviews and discusses methods to include functional and anatomical brain con-nectivity to improve source reconstruction

    Didactic Structure:

    The main ingredients of the didactic concept are:

    • oral presentations by renowned experts in the respective field of research,
    • self-study time for elaborating and discussing the presented topics,
    • panel discussions for discussion issues that have come up during the talks and the self-study time, and
    • project work by the participants in small groups,
    • presentation and evaluation of the work of the students, and
    • social program.

    Costs:

    600 Euro including tuition, 12 overnight stays, breakfast, lunch, coffee breaks and social program. 350 Euro for Chinese participants excluding accommodation.
