Welcome to the Chemistry Group

Teaching

We offer students a sound scientific-chemical education with a focus on chemical and biological systems. The bachelor's and master's degree programmes serve to impart scientific principles, methodological competence and professional qualifications. Great importance is attached to the practice-oriented education and individual support of each student.

Due to the broadly diversified education, numerous professional fields in industry, universities, university and non-university research institutions are open to the graduates.

Research

Carbon nanotubes (CNT) are the most fascinating new members of the carbon family, offering unique mechanical and electronic properties combined with chemical stability. Since their discovery, many experimental and theoretical studies have been conducted on their manufacture, purification, mechanical and electronic properties and electrical conductivity.

Given the importance of CNTs in all areas of nanoscience and nanotechnology, our research interest is focused on the study of CNT synthesis and growth mechanisms in thermal-chemical vapor deposition and their electrochemical properties. The functionalization of CNTs by chemical bonding or by functional groups on their sidewalls is an effective way to improve their solubility and to enhance their physical properties, making them potentially useful for technological applications, from nanoelectronics to sensors and medical applications.

The Chemistry Group, in collaboration with other academic and industrial partners, is interested in the production of new carbon compounds and nanomaterials by functionalization of CNTs or fullerenes and their potential application in various fields. The scientific goal is to gain a better understanding of the dependence of the chemical properties of carbon materials on the extent and type of functionalization. The purpose of our research is to find a controlled method for modifying the electrochemical and biological properties of CNTs and fullerenes based on the type and degree of their functionalization. To achieve the goal of our research work, carbon nanomaterials with adapted parameters are produced, functionalized and further investigated for use in new fields of application.
