IfMK PhD students present at the international conference "Health, Migration, and Transition in Asia”

At the 10th International Conference of the Ateneo Center for Asian Studies in Manila on the topic of "Health, Migration, and Transition in Asia", four doctoral students from the Institute for Media and Communication Studies at the TU Ilmenau presented the latest research results on November 19, 2020.

 

Le Ngoc Son, Managing Director of the Vietnamese consulting firm Berlin Crisis Solutions and doctoral student in the Media Studies Group, analyzed together with Prof. Dr. Thu Hang Dinh, Head of the Faculty of Radio and Television at the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics in Hanoi, cultural determinants of dealing with the Covid 19 pandemic. Xu Yi, also a PhD student in the Media Studies Group, presented the results of an elaborate multimodal framing analysis of German news on Covid-19 on Twitter. Pauline Gidget Estella, assistant professor at the University of the Philippines and PhD student in the Media Studies Group, explained - based on the model of global journalistic competence she developed - the qualification requirements of journalists who report on health crises. Mira Rochyadi-Reetz, research assistant and PhD student in the Empirical Media Research and Political Communication Group, together with her Dr. Eni Maryani from Padjajaran University in Bandung and Dr. Anna Agustina, Dean of the Faculty of Communication at Pancasila University in Jakarta, presented the findings of a large-scale study on the influence of media use on the emergence of fears about the possible consequences of the corona pandemic in Indonesia. The panel "Communication about Covid-19 in an Asian setting: Cultural determinants, visual framing, journalistic competence and the perception of fear Cultural issues in public health crisis communication" was moderated by Prof. Dr. Martin Löffelholz, Director of the IfMK. More than 300 researchers from the Asia-Pacific region, Australia and Europe participated in the virtual conference.
