Information & Advice

What should be taken into account?

Planning a semester abroad takes time. In general, one calculates for the organisation and preparation for a semester abroad one to one and half years. The time span depends on the kind of stay (semester or complete course), possible application process at the university of origin and the process of administration in the homeland and the destination, in this case Germany. It is recommended to contact the responsible office at your home university early.

Tuition Fees

A great advantage about studying in Germany is that universities of the state do not charge tuition fees. Because of that you do not have to pay tuition fees at the TU Ilmenau.

Solely for covering administrative work and the free usage of the regional trains in Thuringia, the university charges you a small amount each semester. In the winter semester of 2016/2017 the study charge was about 110 Euros.

Financial Support

European students can get financial support during their stay abroad from the ERASMUS+ programme. A request for ERASMUS+ - support often makes sense. The formal request can be handed in at the closest Erasmus office in your home country. More information can be found here:

Erasmus+ - offcial website
Erasmus+ - on the TU Ilmenau website

For European and international students it is also recommended to inform themselves about scholarships for studying abroad. University-internal and -external possibilities can be discussed at your home university.

Proof of Language Competence

All Bachelor applicants for a semester abroad at the Department EM need to prove sufficient German- or English skills. Similar conditions are valid for Master courses. Nevertheless, please take into account that the Master of Communication Science is exclusively in English.

Among others the following language certificates are accepted:

English: IELTS, Cambridge Exam, TOEFL, TOEIC

German: DSH, DSD, TestDaF, telc Deutsch, Central Advanced Language Test of the Goethe-Institute (ZOP), Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom of the Goethe-Institute (GDS), completed study programme in German studies

Visa

Non-European students must have a student visa (valid three months) before arriving in Germany. The student visa needs to be requested early in your home country. When in Germany, it is necessary to extend the student visa within these three months at the foreigners' registration office (Ausländerbehörde) by applying for a permission to remain.

More information can be found on the following pages:

Visa - official side of the foreigners' registration office
Information about visa on the TU Ilmenau page

Recognition of Modules and Courses

Before you start your Bachelor or Master course at TU Ilmenau,  we recommend informing yourself about the possible recognition of your degree from TU Ilmenau. The best way to do this is to get in contact with the responsible department at your home university (e.g. International Office).

Additionally it is possible and also recommended to find out about the recognition of successfully completed modules in Germany before your semester abroad. You can do this by discussing the modules from your Learning Agreement with the International Office at your home university.

Living and Studying in Ilmenau

Facilities

The Technical University of Ilmenau is closely integrated into the daily life of the town of Ilmenau. The relatively young and modern university has two campus areas located closely together: the Hans-Stamm-Campus and the City Campus.

With their new and well equipped facilities and the unique student offerings, the TU Ilmenau has a magnificent reputation, especially with companies.

Infrastructure in Germany

Germany itself is greatly linked by trains, busses and other means of transportation. The high degree of connectivity simplifies the arrival in Ilmenau and travels from here to other areas of Germany.

Foreign students can arrive in Ilmenau mainly by airplane, train, car or bus. Erfurt, as the capital city of Thuringia, is the closest center of transportation means. Airports in this area are Erfurt, Frankfurt, Leipzig and also Munich.

Language

The main language spoken in Germany in German. Additionally English knowledge is common, especially in the younger population. English skills are working fine for communication at the university, because generally lecturers, staff and students obtain well knowledge of the language. The TU Ilmenau also has a Institute of Languages where besides German and English many further languages are taught. Foreign students can extent their language skills there.

Residing and Living

Ilmenau is especially attractive in regard to its low living costs. Costs for rent are lower than in other German cities, where there is often a scarcity of rental porperty. Ilmenau offers enough habitation and dormitories for students. Those are closely located on the campus. An application for dormitories directly on the campus is recommended.

Further information on flats and the application are on the homepage of the Studierendenwerk Thüringen.

An overview of the dormitories is here.

Alternatively and independent from the university, check the page WG-gesucht offering places to live.*

Student Life

The TU Ilmenau also offers many different cultural possibilities. A lively student culture includes for example four frequently visited student clubs directly on the campus, different associations, networks such as we4you and the ISWI e.V., who are specially engaged in organizing an internationally attractive programme and have a high percentage of international students as members.

More interesting information for those associations is in the menu item Studentenleben at Culture, Representation of Interest and Initiative on the homepage of the TU Ilmenau.
