Information & Advice

Planning a semester abroad takes time. In general, one calculates for the organisation and preparation for a semester abroad one to one and half years. The time span depends on the kind of stay (semester or complete course), possible application process at the university of origin and the process of administration in the homeland and the destination, in this case Germany. It is recommended to contact the responsible office at your home university early.

Tuition Fees

A great advantage about studying in Germany is that universities of the state do not charge tuition fees. Because of that you do not have to pay tuition fees at the TU Ilmenau.

Solely for covering administrative work and the free usage of the regional trains in Thuringia, the university charges you a small amount each semester. In the winter semester of 2016/2017 the study charge was about 110 Euros.

Financial Support

European students can get financial support during their stay abroad from the ERASMUS+ programme. A request for ERASMUS+ - support often makes sense. The formal request can be handed in at the closest Erasmus office in your home country. More information can be found here:

Erasmus+ - offcial website
Erasmus+ - on the TU Ilmenau website

For European and international students it is also recommended to inform themselves about scholarships for studying abroad. University-internal and -external possibilities can be discussed at your home university.

Proof of Language Competence

All Bachelor applicants for a semester abroad at the Department EM need to prove sufficient German- or English skills. Similar conditions are valid for Master courses. Nevertheless, please take into account that the Master of Communication Science is exclusively in English.

Among others the following language certificates are accepted:

English: IELTS, Cambridge Exam, TOEFL, TOEIC

When in Germany, it is necessary to extend the student visa within these three months at the foreigners' registration office (Ausländerbehörde) by applying for a permission to remain.

Recognition of Modules and Courses

Before you start your Bachelor or Master course at TU Ilmenau,  we recommend informing yourself about the possible recognition of your degree from TU Ilmenau. The best way to do this is to get in contact with the responsible department at your home university (e.g. International Office).

Additionally it is possible and also recommended to find out about the recognition of successfully completed modules in Germany before your semester abroad. You can do this by discussing the modules from your Learning Agreement with the International Office at your home university.
