Materials Science and Engineering


Whether environmental and energy technology, medicine, communication or automotive industries: the "right" material is crucial for the success of a new product with new characteristics. Materials play a key position in the economy. Materials scientists aim to develop, manufacture, analyze and improve materials with specific attitudes and to clarify material damage. Materials Science and Engineering is the right field for students who look for a practical combination of chemistry and physics and wish to develop innovative materials and products that improve our life and sustainably influence our society.

Bachelor Program

The Bachelor program Materials Science and Engineering takes 6 semesters and starts every winter semester in October. It imparts a fundamental and broad knowledge about the interaction between material construction and characteristics regarding processing, usage, recycling and disposal. During the first and second year, basics in natural sciences and engineering are taught. In the fifth semester the students choose from a large number of compulsory lectures depending on their personal interest:

  • Inorganic-nonmetallic materials
  • Metallic and composite materials
  • Plastics technology
  • Materials for Electrical Engineering and Electronics
  • Electrochemistry and Electroplating

Practical experience is an essential part of the program and is carried out through practical work, a special project seminar, experiments, excursions and close cooperation with national and international companies and science partners. We encourage our students to become an active research participant at an early stage of their studies.

Master Program

The 4-semester Master of Science program Materials Science and Engineering starts in the winter semester (October) or the summer semester (April). It deepens the knowledge about structures, characteristics, manufacturing and development of all kinds of materials: metals, glasses, ceramics, polymers and composites.

Master subjects with integrated practical training are:

  • Consolidation of scientific basics
  • Consolidation of materials engineering
  • Materials of micro- and nanotechnology
  • Special plastics technology
  • Surface technology and Electroplating
  • Material selection, condition and analysis

As a specialty the master program includes a complex project with a main seminar.

Double Degree

During the master program, Materials Science and Engineering students have the option to study one year abroad at the Pontificia Universidad Catòlica del Peru (PUCP) and to receive a double degree.
