Interfaces

Essential material properties of glass are determined by its surface, e.g. its strength and optical quality. Current topics of research are alteration and corrosion of glass surfaces, starting from the moment of production, and running on during storage, cleaning and in use.

First reactions on glass surfaces

Comparing very different glass materials and products with different surface history, an astonishing similarity of common features of glass surface degradation are observed. The reasons rot the first stages of differentiation on glass surfaces are investigated in a fundamental project. Potential initiators for the first reactions are nucleated on silicate modell glasses. A study on the alteration of flat glass and tubes in commercial storage conditions showed that variation of the initial production status, which can occur already during forming, are affecting the glass behavior in post-processing steps.

Post-processing of glasses

Other studies compare the real weathering with accelerated lab tests. Controlled surface processing is indispensable for modern glass production. Almost every glass product on the market has undergone some surface conditioning. The most important post-processing is coating. ANW investigates interfaces between glass substrates and coatings and develops sol-gel coatings.
