Professional background

Pauline Gidget Estella works as an assistant professor in the University of the Philippines and a consultant for journalism curriculum development at the Philippine Department of Education. She teaches communication research, journalism, and English as second language to both Filipinos and international students in her home university. She is also a consultant/trainer for workplace communication in several Philippines-based companies.

Estella gained her Bachelor’s degree in Journalism (cum laude) at the University of the Philippines and her Master’s degree in Communication Arts (Academic Achievement awardee) from the same university. In her research, she focuses on journalism education, media studies, and development communication. Her dissertation, under the supervision of Dr. Martin Löffelholz, examines the development of journalism education in Southeast Asia in the internet age.

Prior to being awarded with a government scholarship for her doctoral studies, Estella has presented her research on journalism pedagogy and education evaluation in various conferences. She was also active in the alternative journalism sphere before she was appointed as instructor in the university.
