INHALTE

Technische Universität Ilmenau regards itself as an internationally-oriented institution with regional roots. A wide range of technical as well as scientific courses of study and research projects enable Technische Universität Ilmenau to collaborate intensively with commercial enterprises and institutions in Germany, Europe and worldwide.

Being the only University of Technology in the Free State of Thuringia, TU Ilmenau gives an important impetus to the regional economy due to its high class R&D infrastructure. As a consequence of the specific orientation, Technische Universität Ilmenau is an important partner for technology-oriented companies. At present we have scientific contacts with about 300 enterprises.

With a dense network of about 60 universities, economically-oriented institutions, university as well as non-university research institutions, the Free State of Thuringia and especially the region Erfurt-Jena-Ilmenau have an excellent reputation in and outside of its borders.

The research areas in Thuringia focus on promising innovative technology fields, such as:

•    Automotive Engineering
•    Manufacturing Technology and Automation
•    Information and Communication Technology
•    Medical Engineering / Biotechnology
•    New Materials
•    Optics / Photonics
•    Solar and Environmental Technologies

Technische Universität Ilmenau significantly influences these technology fields due to its specific research foci.

The Ilm-Kreis (www.ilm-kreis.de) is located next to the Thuringian capital of Erfurt and along the Thuringian Forest. The two most important areas for development in this region are the cities of Arnstadt (www.arnstadt.de) and Ilmenau (www.ilmenau.de).

Technische Universität Ilmenau hereby constitutes the core of technological development within the Ilmenau and Arnstadt Technology Region (www.tria-online.eu). TU Ilmenau maintains a close collaboration with the clusters and networks engaged in the Ilmenau and Arnstadt Technology Region, as for example (only partially in English):

More than 100 technology-oriented enterprises have settled in the inmediate surroundings of the university or have developed from the technology and founder centre over the past years. This led to the creation of an industrial belt with new business parks such as “Am Wald”, “Softwarepark Albert- Einstein- Straße“, “Werner- von Siemens-Straße“ around the university campus. Another completely developed business park, the “Robert- Bosch- Ring“, comprising almost  20 ha, is located in close proximity to the university and the now almost fully used business parks.

The university's processes of scientific and technological transfer will continue to be a driving force for the regional and supraregional economy.
