Students will get an overview on important trends, theories, findings, and applications of communicator research. In particular, students will review the state of research in journalism research and public relations research.

Course description

The course offers an introduction to communicator research in general and selected fields of professional specialization. Students will get insights into different fields of public communication with a focus on journalism and public relations. The course will equip students with fundamentals of social science thinking, theoretical approaches, research methods and the status quo of the professions. In the winter term, students attend a readings-based course with some plenary sessions.

Previous Knowledge

 Basic knowledge on communication, communication theory, and media research


Students should accomplish some tasks during the semester (for example literature research or a presentation), write a term paper and take an oral exam.

Course will be held both, online and in presence. Completing the course with online-only participation is possible. Being present in Ilmenau is not necessary for passing this class. However, for students being present in Ilmenau, some classes might be held in presence.
