Declaration of the Technische Universität Ilmenau on open access to research results

According to its mission statement, the Technische Universität Ilmenau understands scientific publications "as proof of the quality of research results and at the same time as an important means of academic exchange."

The open and unlimited access to research results is an important precondition for the preservation and intensification of the international academic exchange. Thus with regard to scientific publications, the Technische Universität Ilmenau is committed to the principles of "Open Access" as stated in the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities. Furthermore, the university also underscores its commitment to free access to research data – secured on a long-term basis – emerging from and being collected due to scientific work (measurement series, survey data etc.).

The following principles and measures serve the promotion of Open Access:

  • The Technische Universität Ilmenau recommends scientists to publish research results Open Access.
  • The university sets up a fund providing the means for payment of charges which have to be met for the publication in quality-assured Open Access publication media.
  • The Technische Universität Ilmenau points out the possibility of publishing academic results – as far as no infringement of copyright occurs – parallel or after a certain emabrgo period in digital form using, for instance, ilmedia service provided by the University Library.
    Scientists are encouraged to abandon the assignment of the exploitation of exclusive rights and ascribe only the simple right to provide public access by contractual provision.

Regarding research data management, the Technische Universität Ilmenau is guided by the following principles:

  • Research data based on scientific work at the university ought to be secured in the long term and kept available for commonly continued use safeguarding the interests of research partners.
  • Secured and accessible research data together with the university bibliography help to ensure that information on research results gained at the university are collected and published.

Central reference points located at the University Library offer advice and organizational help with respect to publication via Open Access and the securing of research data.

Decided by the Senate Committee for Research and Young Academics on 11 March 2014 and confirmed by the Senate of the Technische Universität Ilmenau on 15 April 2014.
