OA publication fund

Open Access Publication Fund of the Technische Universität Ilmenau

The Technische Universität Ilmenau offers its scientists the opportunity to cover the charges for publishing academic articles in Open Access journals ("Article Processing Charges“). The necessary publication fund has been established accordingly, also providing organizational relief for academic publishers due to a simple application procedure.

In 2019 the TU Ilmenau has 15,000 euro in total at its disposal for the financial support of publications in Open Access journals, whereas 40% of the total was subsidized by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation).

Publication charges are covered when the following criteria are met:

  • The applicant is a member of the TU Ilmenau and is either "submitting author“ or "corresponding author“ of the publication.
  • The journal where the article shall be published gives access to all articles immediately after publishing, free of charge and without technical or legal barriers on the Internet. Stringent quality control procedures are applied (usually by a review procedure).
    • Charges are not covered for Open Access activation of single articles in the setting of subscription-based or licensed journals ("hybrid" financing as e.g. "Springer Open Choice").
    • A trustworthy data base of quality-assured "real" Open Access journals is provided by Directory of Open Access Journals. If there is any doubt about the reliability and seriousness of a journal, the Open Access Representative is at your service.
  • The publication charge does not exceed the amount of 2,000 euro incl. tax.
  • The applicant or any other person involved in the publication do not dispose of any other dedicated financial means from other sources for Open Access publications for the publication in question (e.g. project-based grants).

The application for cost coverage can be filed via the application form or informally by email sent to

When sending an email with the application, the following information is required: Title of the journal, title of the article, position of the applicant with reference to the publication (submitting or corresponding author), release date of the article, amount of the publication charges and, if possible, information on third-party funding of the associated research project.
