INHALTE

Universitätsverlag Ilmenau (university press)

Since 2006 the Ilmenau University Library has been operating the Universitätsverlag Ilmenau (university press) for scientists of the university.

This service is embedded in the overall concept and objectives of ilmedia, thus contributing to the recognition, distribution and reception of scientific publications. Therefore, a text published as a book is not only offered at a competitive price in bookstores but is also available as an electronic document in the Digitale Bibliothek Thüringen (Digital Library Thuringia). The authors benefit significantly from hybrid publishing as their articles, books etc. are available worldwide on the Internet without having to abandon the user-friendly version of a printed books.

Who can publish in Universitätsverlag Ilmenau?

The Universitätsverlag Ilmenau is available to all scientists of TU Ilmenau, provided they are authors or editors of a publication. Doctoral students of the university can publish their dissertations at Universitätsverlag Ilmenau. Diploma, Bachelor or Master’s theses as examples of students‘ scientific work can also be published here with the required approval of the academic supervisor.

What is the workflow like?

The authors format the manuscript according to the specifications of the publisher and submit it electronically. The publisher is responsible for the cover, the title, printing and the availability for the supply of booksellers for five years. Furthermore, the publisher provides the ISBN and sends deposit copies to the Deutsche Bücherei in Leipzig and Thüringer Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek in Jena (Thuringian University and State Library Jena). The publisher also organizes the electronic publication in the Digitale Bibliothek Thüringen (Digital Library Thuringia) as well as the citation and indexing in library catalogues and the university bibliography of TU Ilmenau.

What does the author receive?

The publisher advises the author at all publishing stages. After printing, the author receives 12 copies and – on request – he/she can obtain further copies at a preferential price for authors. Starting with the 26th book sold, the author receives 75% of the revenue as a fee.

Publishing a book, for example, in Universitätsverlag Ilmenau (university press) is paid entirely by the author. The publisher invoices the author for all costs of external service providers and charges of the publisher’s services.

Sample calculation:
A dissertation in DIN-A5 with 230 pages (without color pages) costs about 750 euros. The book in the bookstore costs about 18,30 euros - affordable for any interested person.

When the book has been appropriately disseminated in academic libraries, the author can uniquely register for royalties with the Verwertungsgesellschaft Wort (VG Wort) (organization for book royalties; up to three years after publishing; the publishing year included). For a book with 101 to 300 pages the royalties per year amounted to:

  • 2007 (for 2006): 350 euro,
  • 2008 (for 2007): 400 euro,
  • 2009 (for 2008): 500 euro,
  • 2010 (for 2009): 1,200 euro,
  • 2011 (for 2010): 800 euro,
  • 2012 (for 2011): 800 euro,
  • 2013 (for 2012): 800 euro,
  • 2014 (for 2013): 800 euro,
  • 2015 (for 2014): 900 euro,
  • 2016 (for 2015): 900 euro,
  • 2017 (for 2016): 900 euro,
  • 2018 (for 2017): 1,800 euro

and

  • 2019 (for 2018): 1,900 euro.

In this case, the publication costs decrease and the sum can be reduced due to further sales within the availability period of five years.

Good to know

The foundation of the cooperation between author and publisher is the publishing contract regulating costs and fees, the availability in the bookstores and the rights of use to be granted to the publisher. When publishing the electronic version, the author grants the publisher only a simple (general) right of use, i.e. the author can publish, offer and distribute the text on his/her website or the website of a third party. This is a decisive advantage. When publishing with the Universitätsverlag Ilmenau, the author not only receives the printed book, but he/she also still retains all opportunities of distributing his/her publication on the Internet – the medium of increasing importance for science. By arrangement with the publisher, the electronic publication can be organized delayed to redeem costs for the book publication by sales..
