Welcome to the Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Informatics at the TU Ilmenau

The Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Informatics (BMTI) is working in the field of research and development of technique-oriented methods and systems for early detection, diagnosis, therapy and rehabilitation in medicine. The BMTI was certified according to the "System der Qualitätssicherung in der Ausbildung der Gütegemeinschaft der Medizintechnik (GGMT)" and is the first educational institution receiving the RAL seal of quality. The new bachelor and master degree programs "Biomedical Engineering" were introduced in the year 2005. Biomedical Engineering is technology for life. In cooperation with medical partners it directly affects the human health and develops new methods for detection and treatment of diseases and implements them in medical technologies.

The TU Ilmenau has a long and successful tradition in the field of biomedical engineering. Already in the year of 1953 the Institute of Electromedical and Radiological Engineering was established at the former “Hochschule für Elektrotechnik” (HfE), which was the first university institute in Europe that introduced an on-campus program of Biomedical Engineering.

Fluorescence intensity (A and B) and fluorescence lifetimes (C, D, and E) before cataract surgery (A, C, and D), and after cataract surgery (B and E). C (M2) and E (Reference) show the mean fluorescence lifetime τm,all using three exponential components while D (M1) shows τm,12 using only the first two exponential components. There is a good correspondence between τm,all after cataract surgery with τm,12 before cataract surgery. The color scaling is identical for all fluorescence lifetimes.

20.08.2020 – Two Awards for Thomas Jochmann at the ISMRM 2020 Annual Meeting

Congratulations to our PhD student Thomas Jochmann for winning two awards during the annual meeting of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine:

1st prize in the ISMRM Electro-Magnetic Tissue Properties Study Group Poster Competition.
The poster, authored by Thomas Jochmann, Jens Haueisen, and Ferdinand Schweser is the result of collaborative research with the University at Buffalo (USA) and is available for download.

With another submission, Thomas Jochmann won the
3rd prize in the ISMRM Quantitative MRI Study Group Public Engagement Competition
for explaining a difficult subject of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to a wider audience.


11.08.2020 – New innovation on European Commission's Innovation Radar platform.

Our innovation of a “Physical head phantom for bio-electromagnetic application”, developed in the EU project BREAKBEN  is listed on the European Commission's Innovation Radar platform with an “Exploring” market maturity.
