26.02.2019 – New research in the field of retinal vessel analysis

For the Optoelectrophysiological Engineering group, the research spectrum of retinal vessel analysis will be expanded to include the new field of pressure-based retinal diagnostics. In collaboration with Imedos Systems GmbH, the leading manufacturer of systems for retinal vessels analysis, a medical device for targeted intraocular pressure elevation has been developed in the last three years. Using the new device, a proof-of-principle study including 12 subjects was carried out at the BMTI. For the first time, the dynamic responses of the retinal capillary bed could be observed after specific pressure elevation. The control processes have a decisive influence on retinal function. Disorders that occur over a longer period of time can lead to serious eye diseases. At present, these cannot be measured diagnostically. In the future, the method will be used to develop new diagnostic parameters and explore their potential for an early detection of eye diseases.
