INHALTE

Nuclear laboratory

The nuclear radiation laboratory allows the practical handling of radio-active materials and the experimental examination of emergence and characteristics of alpha, beta, and gamma radiations. By using different radiation sources, the capacity of various radiation detectors can be investigated. Therefore the laboratory allows a practical training in fields of teaching like medical radiation physics, radiation measurements, and radiation protection.

As result of the recent modernization supported by the Strahlenschutzseminar in Thüringen e.V.  (Radiation Protection Seminar in Thuringia), up to seven groups of three students can work simultaneously within the laboratory. Additionally, all workplaces are equipped with LAN-connected computers, which support an efficient supervision of experiments and their results by the tutor. Furthermore, a liquid nitrogen cooled high-purity germanium detector for gamma spectroscopy and a scintillation camera for nuclear medical imaging are available for practical trainings. All radioactive materials are enclosed radiation sources to exclude contaminations. They are kept in a special bunker.

The laboratory is approved by the authorities of Thuringia according to the Radiation Protection Ordinance. The experiments are designed so that the radiation exposure for students complies with the limits for the human population, which is controlled by directly indicating dosimeters.
