On the 20th of August, Mr. Waqas Ejaz successfully defended his PhD about “European Identity and Media Effects: A Quantitative Comparative Analysis”. The work was supervised by Prof. Wolling (EMPK). Mr. Ejaz will now join the Department of Mass Communication at National University of Science and Technology (NUST) in Pakistan as Assistant Professor, where he will be responsible for introducing and teaching computational communication research methods. NUST is recognized as one of the top universities not just in Pakistan but also in the region.

Lena Birkenfeld, external doctoral student at the Research Group for Empirical Media Research and Political Communication, successfully defended her dissertation "A comparative analysis of German and Australian climate change coverage – Framing an environmental disaster and a political election" on 13.06.2019. In her dissertation, Ms Birkenfeld analysed the reporting on climate change by two quality newspapers each in Germany and Australia. The study took place in the context of two special events - a political election and an extreme weather event. The differences found were discussed against the background of the political, economic, ecological and media-system-related framework conditions in the two countries.
