How are Love and Sex with Robots Represented in the Media?

Prof. Döring and PD Pöschl Publish in the International Journal of Social Robotics

International Journal of Social Robotics

In their journal article „Love and Sex with Robots: A Content Analysis of Media Representations“ in the International Journal of Social Robotics (Impact Factor 2017: 2.009) Prof. Dr. Nicola Döring and PD Dr. Sandra Pöschl, Research Group Media Psychology and Media Design, present the results of a quantitative content analysis of N = 710 non-fictional as well as fictional online media contributions on intimate human-robot relationships. It turned out that the media often depict intimate human-robot relationships along traditional gender roles and heteronormativity and emphasize sexual aspects more than emotional ones. This is more the case with non-fictional media representations than with fictional ones, which highlight the emotional and social dimensions of intimate human-robot relationships. Conclusions for the future development of robots, specifically so-called love and sex robots, are discussed.
