How Gender Equal is YouTube?
Prof. Döring publishes in the handbook „Medien und Geschlecht“ [Media and Gender]
In her chapter "Videoproduktion auf YouTube: Die Bedeutung von Geschlechterbildern" [Video Production on YouTube: The Relevance of Gender Images], which is published in the handbook "Medien und Geschlecht. Perspektiven und Befunde der feministischen Kommunikations- und Medienforschung" [Media and Gender. Perspectives and Findings of the Feminist Communication and Media Research], Prof. Dr. Nicola Döring, Research Group Media Psychology and Media Design, gives a current overview of the state of research on gender equality on YouTube. Among the topics discussed are the lower participation of girls and women in video production, trends in gender stereotyping in video contents, as well as the sometimes sexist reactions of the audience in the video commentaries. The contribution identifies gaps in research and ends with practical recommendations to promote gender equality on YouTube.
