Are Fail Videos on YouTube Sexist?

Prof. Döring and Dr. Mohseni publish in the Journal “Communication Research Reports”

Journal “Communication Research Reports”

In their article “Fail videos and related video comments on YouTube: a case of sexualization of women and gendered hate speech? - published in “Communication Research Reports” (one of three journals of the Eastern Communication Association) - Prof. Dr. Nicola Döring and Dr. Rohangis Mohseni, Research Group Media Psychology and Media Design, present another replication study on sexist hate speech comments on YouTube.

It was found that women in fail videos were portrayed in an objectifying, sexualized manner twice as often, and were the target of gendered hate comments in the comments section nearly five times more often compared to men. This pattern is comparable to previous replication studies, which mostly (but not always) showed that gendered hate comments are more often directed against women than against men.

The publication is one of the first in the journal to make use of Open Data and Open Materials. https://osf.io/afdkq/
