Quality of Child Sexual Abuse Media Coverage

Prof. Döring and R. Walter, M.A., publish in the Journal of Child Sexual Abuse

Journal of Child Sexual Abuse

In Germany, 13% of the population report being sexually abused in their childhood. Quality media coverage of child sexual abuse is important to advance the solution of this societal problem. However, current research shows that media coverage on child sexual abuse often shows quality shortcomings. Which quality shortcomings are widespread and how the quality of media coverage on child sexual abuse can be improved is a research topic in the Research Group Media Psychology and Media Design at TU Ilmenau.

A theoretically and empirically grounded model with ten abuse-specific journalistic quality criteria was developed. This model has now been published in the Journal of Child Sexual Abuse (Journal Impact Factor IF = 0.963). In their contribution „Media Coverage of Child Sexual Abuse: A Framework of Issue-Specific Quality Criteria“, Prof. Dr. Nicola Döring and Roberto Walter, M.A., explain the individual quality criteria. The model can be a foundation of empirical media quality analyses and furthermore be used in journalism training.
