- Abstract:
- The strong trend to All-IP networks in mobile communications requires the development of new solutions to support fast handover with suitable QoS. In this paper we propose a new architecture for MPLS-based micro mobility management. Our proposal called Optimized Integrated-Multi-Protocol Label Switching (Optimized I-MPLS). This approach integrates the traffic engineering and QoS capabilities of MPLS with Mobile IP Fast Authentication protocol (MIFA) as a mobility management framework. The integration of MPLS and MIFA is achieved through encapsulating MIFA control messages in MPLS signalling messages. The advantage of our approach is the transparency to Mobile Nodes (MNs), i.e. the MNs only have to support MIP, while Optimized I-MPLS is used in the infrastructure only. Optimized I-MPLS significantly reduces the encapsulation overhead of IP-in-IP tunneling, supports fast handoffs, flexible QoS models, enhances access security and allows for the stepwise integration in existing networks.
