Abstract:
As traffic demands are steadily growing, demanding for a densification of the mobile network infrastructure, the use of aerial base stations is an important option in order to serve areas with temporarily high data demand. Aerial base station have the advantage of being able to follow the traffic demand and to supplement the ground infrastructure with extra capacity. Due to their elevation and proximity to the user, path loss is typically rather small which in turn enables high capacity services. We study algorithms to optimize the placement of aerial base stations in order to maximize the system capacity. We compare solutions with respect to quality as well as computational complexity, i.e. the time required to derive the placement. This is an important aspect for aerial base stations that are supposed to follow the traffic. We show that our algorithm, employing a distance-based fast capacity approximation function, outperforms previous proposals with respect to computational effort by a factor of up to 100 without any loss in the quality of the solution.
