Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) play an instrumental role in automation and control. Learning how to program these devices is not only important to students of control engineering but also to a wide range of professional in electrical engineering. With advent of the Internet of Things their role will continue to increase. In this context continuing professional development and upskilling is very important. Providing access to practical development activities for professionals in Industry can be a challenge. While some PLC programming environments are freely available, practical learning activities require access to physical hardware. Remote laboratories are being widely used at Universities to provide remote access hardware, sometimes as alternatives to face-to-face laboratory activities. A number of papers have reported on remote labs for teaching PLCs. The project that is discussed in this paper focuses on a flexible system solution that provides opportunities for PLC to control real models and can be integrated with existing RAL systems. The aim of this project is to develop and test an approach that allows external participants to program real hardware models via a PLC in a safe environment. The proposed architecture integrates into the existing system. This work discusses the overall system approach.
