Autonomous D2D Communication using Software Defined Radios

Abstract:
With the exponential growth of mobile data traffic in cellular system, data offloading has become one of the proposed solution targeting spectral efficiency, high data rate and latency constraints. These are achieved by shifting the cellular data to the user equipment in cellular band. This paradigm is standardized as Device to Device (D2D) communication. With the introduction of Rel-12 D2D, assumption like half-duplex & lack of Hybrid Automatic Repeat Request (HARQ) mechanism causes the autonomous resource allocation a challenging task in terms of minimizing latency and collisions. In this demo paper, we broadly examine autonomous resource allocation via Software Defined Radio (SDR) using SRS-LTE. This is an open source LTE software suite running on USRP B210 hardware platform. More- over, we propose an autonomous resource allocation algorithm which outperforms Rel-12 Mode-2 communication in terms of latency. The pros and cons of the proposed protocols are also discussed.
