- Increasing use of mobile services require reliable radio access networks. Due to the failure probability of communication links and equipment, protection schemes are needed to ensure reliable networks. Protection schemes are used either to bypass a link failure locally (reroute) or to switch traffic to an alternative path (protection switching). This paper studies the application of different protection schemes in MPLS-based networks. An analytical model is used to compare the reroute and protection schemes. Local reroute schemes provide the best performance for real and large networks.
