User Modelling in e-Learning Environments

As a growing number of users in online course, e-learning is accepted as an online learning and teaching form. In order to improve learner’s learning efficiency in e-learning systems, an adaptive e-learning is required. This adaptive e-learning provides appropriate online courses according to learner’s feature. Thus, it is essential for adaptive e-learning systems to build a user model where learner’s features, relevant for adaptation, are saved.

In this working, the construction of a user model will be performed in theoretical and practical view. Based on IMS LIP, an extensible user model is adopted. User features, relevant for adaptation, are defined in this user model. This user model mainly contains information of a learner about basic features, psychological features and his interaction with systems.

In this working, user features are argued in theoretical and practical way. In a theoretical view usability of these user features are analyzed in an existing user model of an adaptive system, and, in a practical view, this user model is evaluated in the learning management system Moodle.

The result of this working demonstrates that the user model provides the adaptation with the user features in different areas. A user model, containing information about basic user features, psychological cognitive user features and interaction with systems, provides versatile learner adaptation.
