Study of modeling approaches for the High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) channel in UMTS

This paper deals with the High-Speed Downlink Packet Access
(HSDPA), a packet switched data service in the CDMA-Downlink
of UMTS which reaches up to 14.4 Mbps under ideal conditions. The text describes the architecture of HSDPA and delivers an insight into mechanisms and improvements used for it. Especially the modifications in architecture (MAC-hs) and data transmission (AMC) as well as the introduction of new radio channels (HS-DSCH) and a data
retransmission mechanism (hybrid-ARQ) will be described. In the second chapter a model which is able to estimate the consumption of radio ressources and the actual data throughput of HSDPA will be described. This model will also consider influences on the throughput as the number of active mobiles and radio conditions.
