Goals

 

The course builds on sound knowledge of communication systems (protocols and networks) and basic knowledge on mobile communication systems. The course provides an in-depth understanding of research issues in advanced mobile communication networks. The course is research-oriented and focuses primarily on the media access control, mobility management, QoS and resource management for mobile systems. In addition, the course introduces future systems and technologies, such as ad-hoc networks and cognitive radio. Furthermore, the course gives an overview of self-organization and its impact on future communication systems.

The course covers cellular systems from GSM and UMTS/HSPA to LTE, LTE-A and 5G while the main focus is on LTE and new developments in 5G. We will discuss central system functions as mobility management, management of the radio resources, session and call control functions, provision of quality of service as well as network operation and management for the differnet systems.

Prerequisites: Communication Networks and Protocols, Mobile Communication Networks.

Procedure

  • This course is offered in the summer semester.
  • Written examination during the official university examination period (registration via Moodle).

  • Binding registration for the exam (using Thoska or the registration form provided by the examination office IA) is required at the beginning of each semester (check the registration time window which is defined each semester) in order to participate in the final exam. As your course grade is a result of the final exam, only formally registered students are eligible for participation in the final exam at the end of the semester and may receive credits for it.

  • Credits: 5 ECTS

  • In order to participate in the exam and receive credit for the course, students need to register for the course with the Thoska system or the examination office. The time window for the registration will be announced by email to students registered in Moodle.
