This course will familiarise learners with specialist vocabulary and with the way academic texts are structured. Participants will have the opportunity to read, interpret, and discuss examples of scientific and technical writing. General linguistic principles will be reinforced in one set of lessons. In another set of lessons, issues relating to technical German will be introduced.

Each day, there are two hours of the first type of lesson as well as two hours of the second type of lesson.
Tuition will be complemented by lectures on technology, visits to the university's laboratories, and practical exercises in the fields of electrical engineering, information technology, computer science and automation, and mechanical engineering.

The course German for Technical Purpose involves researching, assembling and presenting of a Project Work

Furthermore, individual and group instruction is offered in pronunciation practice lessons to support participants in accent reduction. These lessons are given by teachers who are specially trained in phonetics.

There will be a placement test at the start of the course.

The course concludes with a language exam and the awarding of certificates.

Accompanying program

There is a cultural program nearly each day which is an organised part of the summer course.

The course fees include:


Excursions for example to Erfurt, Weimar, Eisenach, Saalfelder Feengrotten, Bamberg and Jena, together with walks in the wooded hills of the Thüringer Wald.

Social Events

In the evenings, there is a warm invitation to concerts, plays, folk-dancing, workshops, lectures, physical activities and games, and to parties. The language teachers and course helpers will be there for the welcoming party on the first evening and for the farewell party. Student social life revolves in Ilmenau around the student clubs – the course members can find relaxation and entertainment late into the night.

The staff in the office for the German course will gladly lend out sports equipment for games such as football, basketball, volleyball, tennis and table tennis.

Additionals Excursions

There are other excursions on offer for which an additional charge is made.

During the course in August you will have the possibility to take part in a  trip to Berlin. The price of 130 €  includes the journey by bus, accommodation and guided tours. We provide maximum 47 places. The booking is binding.
