Application
In case you are nominated as an Erasmus+ student, you are kindly requested to register online and carry out the explained procedure:

All first degree courses and most masters courses are solely taught and tested in German. Information about master courses in English offered by our university you can find here.

Please upload the completed Learning Agreement, together with your Transcript of Records and a certificate of your language knowledge (German or English, depends on the subject).
Please do not send the application documents by email or fax. Only complete forms and applications will be taken into consideration.
Application deadlines for Erasmus+ students:
June 1st for winter semester (start October) or full academic year
December 1st for summer semester (start April)
Students who intend to do a project, to complete their final theses or to do an Erasmus+ internship are requested to find an academic advisor (professor) at TU Ilmenau. The academic advisor’s name is to be stated in the application form. Finally please register online and carry out the explained procedure:

After checking your application, we will send an invitation letter and the signed Learning Agreement.
Accommodation
The Studierendenwerk is offering every student the possibility to live on campus. Please apply online for student housing.
Please keep in mind that you have to pay a deposit of 300 € for a room in the students´dorm, which will be returned at the end of your stay.

Support for international students

The international students network “we4you” will guide you through your first steps in town and will stay in contact with you during your study period at TU Ilmenau. They are organizing a welcome and orientation event for all new international students, which takes place at the beginning of each semester.
Your arrival:
If you get in touch with “we4you” before your arrive in Ilmenau, you will be picked up at the train station and welcomed by tutors who will take your to your new residence. Please contact them: via e-mail
Host country formalities
Students from countries of the European Union do not require any visa. However, on arrival in Germany and for registration at the university they do need a passport or identity card. For the obligatory registration with the public authorities you will also need a valid health insurance and a proof of sufficient financial funds equaling a monthly amount of at least 850 € (e.g. bank statement or a confirmation of a grant).

Cost of living
It is advisable to have a budget of 850 € per month (for housing, travel costs, books, food and social activities).
Health insurance
In Germany everybody has to have a valid health insurance. It is advisable to take care of this at your home country. Nevertheless it is possible to get a German health insurance directly after arrival (about 105.00 € / month).
How to get to Ilmenau
There are regular trains every hour from the capital of the State Thuringia, Erfurt, to Ilmenau. For train information, please visit the webpage of Deutsche Bahn.
You can reach Ilmenau from different directions via the A71 autobahn - exit “Ilmenau-Ost”.

How the stay abroad will be financed - parents, grant, Erasmus+?
All students in Germany are required to pay a “semester contribution”, covering the costs of using the offers of the Student Service, the expenses incurred in the student representative system and a season ticket for the train in Thuringia. In Ilmenau the contribution amounts to 144.88 € for the first semester and 129.88 € for the following semester.
Registration takes place at the Academic Service Center (ASC) in Mensa Building. Dates to reach all necessary authorities can be looked up here.
Services provided by the Studierendenwerk: housing and food
TU Ilmenau is mainly a campus university. All students’ dormitories, nearly all the lecture halls and teaching rooms are situated on Hans-Stamm-Campus, on Ehrenberg hill, which gives its name to one of the roads through the campus.
The Studierendenwerk Ilmenau is offering singel or double rooms and single appartments, fully furnished. The rent depends on the location of the student house and varies between 160 and 235 € / month. Everybody has to pay a deposit of 300 €, which will be returned by moving out.
The Studierendenwerk is also responsible for food and is catering the different dining halls on campus. At the Mensa (canteen), the central building on campus, where you can have breakfast, lunch and even dinner. The meals do have student prices and the Mensa is offering always at lunch one vegetarian dish and one without pork. Currently the student prices are 1.50 € - 3 € for a lunch dish.
Study facilities
Laboratories and equipment at TU Ilmenau correspond to the latest scientific standards. In the computer centre and in the faculties students have the latest in computer technology as well as free connection to the Internet at their disposal. An e-mail address for every student is provided.
The university library offers a large collection of scientific literature and is well organized. The patent-information centre allows online access to all scientific magazines and patent databases of the world.
Language courses
During the semester Erasmus+ students have two possibilities to improve their German language skills: You may visit a German language course at the language institute of TU Ilmenau or you can join the language tutorial. Both offers are free of charge. You might get further information from International Office.
Before your studies we suggest to take part in our intensive 7-week German course. This International Summer Course is offered from August till September, focusing on General German, project work and cultural activities. Further details here.
As an Erasmus+ student who is going to spend an Erasmus+ stay in our university, you can ask our Erasmus+ office for a reduced course fee. Requirements are your Erasmus+ nomination to TU Ilmenau, complete Erasmus+ application documents and a letter that underlines your motivation in taking part in the language course.
