Information for newly admitted students

Please note:

We are currently updating all information for the winter semester.
We ask for your understanding that some of the information will be later than usual.
There are many changes and adjustments to the Corona situation, so we can only inform you step by step.

Please check for regular updates always.
We update step by step. The information will be up to date by Friday, October 2, 2020 at the latest.

Everything important at a glance for you as a future student

Notification and quarantine

Notification and quarantine

If you have entered Germany from a country considered a risk area within the last 14 days, you will have to quarantine in your room for 14 days.

This also applies at first if you have a negative Covid-19 test.

Register with the public health department. Only the public health department can decide when the quarantine ends.

Attention: Whoever does not comply with the quarantine must expect penalties (fine, prison sentence in extreme cases).

Here you can find more information.

Mask obligation

Mask obligation

Masks are compulsory.

Masks must be worn in supermarkets and shops, in dining facilities (Mensa!) and on buses and trains. In addition, masks must be worn everywhere where it is not possible to keep a minimum distance of 1.5 m between people.

Protective masks are not absolutely necessary, even self-sewn masks, scarves and cloths are accepted.

Internet access at the university

Internet access at the university

If you are enrolled, you will receive an e-mail from the university data center. They will tell you, how to apply for a personal university account online and how to activate it.

You need the university account to register for seminars and exams, access internal websites, register for sports courses, borrow books from the library and much more.

You will also receive a personalized e-mail address from our university. This is very important because it provides you with important information about your studies (e.g. now about Corona).

In the dormitory you can get an internet connection via FEM (an association for students). Currently you can also get FEM internet access if you are not yet enrolled (e.g. if you are still in quarantine). Contact the FEM-Admin in your house.

Housing

Housing

If you have rented an apartment privately, please contact your landlord.

If you have decided on a place in a student residence on campus, please contact the "Studierendenwerk" in Ilmenau. You can also do this in advance by e-mail and tell them when you will arrive and need your room key.

NOTE:

If you are coming from a risk area or have been there in the last 14 days or have had contact with infected persons, you must inform the dormitory beforehand. Write an e-mail or call before you arrive: Monday to Friday: 10 - 11 am at +49 3577 691917 or +49 3677 692751.

Enrollment

Enrollment

In the winter semester 2020 different rules apply due to corona conditions. The study takes place in presence and online.

If it is possible for you, we strongly recommend that you come to Ilmenau to study. Especially for the start of your studies, presence studies are better for you.

You can already enroll from home and start your studies online. Please enroll in time so that your accounts are already working when the courses start (12th October) and you can participate in the online courses.

Please note the individual conditions of your admission.
Participation in preparatory language courses is only possible in presence.

Information about enrollment can be found here and here.

The registration is made online.
Please send an e-mail to: registration(a)tu-ilmenau.de

Semester fee

Semester fee

All students pay a semester fee for studying in Ilmenau.

This is 149,88€ for the first semester.

The Academic Service Center will send you a request for payment for enrollment. This contains all details of the bank account to which you can transfer the money. Please make sure to use the reason for payment stated on the payment request. (Example: 43225/SS2020/Meyer,Lena)

Only when the money has arrived at the university, you can be properly enrolled and receive your Thoska card.

Student ID card

Student ID card

In our university the student identity card is the so-called Thoska card. You can use it to pay for food, do laundry, go to the library and take the train.

As soon as you have paid the semester contribution, you will receive a personalized Thoska card. Please tell the Academic Service Center your new address in Ilmenau. They will send you the card by postal mail.

Write an e-mail to registration(a)tu-ilmenau.de.

The Thoska terminals (validation, exam management, multifunction device (printing and scanning)) are available from Monday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., via the north entrance (ASC) of the Mensa.

Health insurance

Health insurance

In Germany you have to have a health insurance. Please check your registration to see which health insurance you need:

  • You are admitted directly to do a Bachelor, Master, Diploma - you need a statutory health insurance. Contact one of the health insurance companies mentioned below via e-mail:

    Techniker Krankenkasse: Mr. Sebastian Tost
    Barmer: Mr. Markus Hodermann
    DAK: Mr. Tim Schneider
    AOK: Ms. Sandra Tischer

  • You are admitted to the Academic Preparation Course (APC) or are older than 30 years - you need a private health insurance. You can purchase it online. These are for example:

    Care Concept
     Mawista
    DAAD Insurance

NOTE: A private insurance has only a minimal coverage. Often you will have to pay your doctor's bill yourself and apply to your insurance company for reimbursement. Not all costs are covered either. Please remember that health insurance should provide good protection. Do not take the cheapest insurance. If you are unsure, ask a public health insurance company which they recommend.
