PhD / Doctorate

A doctorate usually lasts 4-5 years and ends with a comprehensive doctoral examination (rigorosum). The thesis submitted will then be presented and defended in a public lecture.

There are no structured doctoral programmes at the TU Ilmenau. You will conduct individual research on your PhD topic and will be supported by a scientific supervisor. The extent to which lectures or seminars are to be attended is also determined individually.

To be admitted as a doctoral candidate, a successful completion of a Master's programme or a comparable degree is required (at least 300 ECTS points).

If you do not fully meet these requirements, your department may require you to take additional examinations, without which the doctoral procedure (final examination) cannot be opened. The scope of the additional examinations depends on your previous subjects.

At the TU Ilmenau, the doctorate can be awarded in German or English.
