Welcome to the Department of Machine Elements

TU Ilmenau - Department of Machine Elements

Origins of the department

The origin of the "Department of Machine Elements" is linked with the foundation of the "University of Electrical Engineering" in the year of 1953, the forerunner of today's TU Ilmenau. The education in "Machine Science" began in 1954 with the foundation of the Institute of the same name.
A detailed explanation of the development can be found in: Meissner, M.; Denecke, K.: Die Geschichte der Maschinenelemente als Fachgebiet und Institut an der Technischen Universität Ilmenau von 1953 bis 2003; Institut für Maschinenelemente und Konstruktion, Berichte aus dem Institut, Heft10; Verlag ISLE Ilmenau, 2003.

Research

In research, the focus is on topics in the field of technical springs. The department and its Wire and Spring Research Group have been working in this field since 1962. The wealth of experience gained in the calculation, simulation, manufacture and testing of technical springs and their raw material has also found its way into the currently leading technical books on springs. In the field of wire and spring research, there is close cooperation with the Steinbeis-Transferzentrum Federntechnik Ilmenau.
