# Hans Babovsky

Physical processes are described almost always by differential equations. The solution of these equations is very difficult and is in most cases accomplished by computer.

Prof. Dr. Hans Babovsky is professor for **Numerical Mathematics and information processing** and works on efficient systems for the solution of differential equations with the help of the computer. He is particularly interested in the motion of gases and fluids.

These problems are very complex and can until now only simulated by means of computers.

Prof. Dr. Thomas Böhme is apl. Prof. at the institute of mathematics.

# Gabriele Eichfelder

Gabriele Eichfelder is Professor for **Mathematical Methods of Operations Research**. The focus of her research is on theoretical investigations and numerical solution methods for continuous optimization problems, such as vector optimization problems. Subjects for her research have often been motivated by applications in the Engineering Sciences or have been carried out in industrial cooperations, which already led to several patent applications. Her main teaching is in the field of optimization. She also provides mathematical training tailored for the needs of students of Engineering.

# Jochen Harant

Prof. Dr. Jochen Harant is professor for **Elements of Mathematics**. His main research field is graph theory - a field of discrete mathematics with lots of applications. For example algorithms in graph theory are needed for the construction of integrated circuits, for transmitter positioning of mobile networks, for scheduling in production processes and for optimization in traffic and transportation.

# Thomas Hotz

Random fluctuations affect most data that are collected, raising the question how much this influences their analysis: what conclusions can be drawn safely from that data? This is at the heart of **Stochastics**, the field of mathematics in which Prof. Dr. Thomas Hotz conducts research and gives lectures. In particular, he is intersted in the statistical analysis of more complicated, non-Euclidean data such as images or shapes, e.g. of fingerprints.

# Achim Ilchmann

Prof. Dr. Achim Ilchmann Achim Ilchmann is head of group **Analysis and Systems Theory** since 2000 and is working in adaptive control of nonlinear systems with biochemical applications and applications in electrical drive systems; he also works in the theory of linear differential algebraic equations. Before that he had a lecturer/reader position at Exeter University (UK) over six years. Achim Ilchmann is one of the organizers of the `Workshop of Mathematical Systems Theory' and `School of Mathematical System Theory', both held (almost) yearly in Elgersburg (DE) and addressed to mathematicians as well as engineers.

# Matthias Kriesell

**Prof. Dr. Matthias Kriesell** is Professor for **Discrete Mathematics and Algebra**

# Yury Person

Yury Person is a tenure-track-Juniorprofessor for Large Networks and Random Graphs. This professorship is endowed by the Carl Zeiss Foundation in the first four years. Yury's research centers around the problems of finding patterns in large random-looking discrete structures. Often, the interplay between structure and randomness is exploited as a proof technique. This has applications in Computer Science, e.g.\ in property testing. Yury Person had several long research stays at the the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (Los Angeles), Hebrew University Jerusalem and at the Universidade de São Paulo. Before joining TU Ilmenau, he was a Juniorprofessor at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main. There he was nominated in 2017 for the excellent teaching award (1822-Universitätspreis für exzellente Lehre) by the students of the Faculty of Computer Science and Mathematics.

# Jens M. Schmidt

Jens M. Schmidt is Jun.-Prof. for **Combinatorial Optimization** and particularly interested in problems that lie on the edge between Mathematics and Computer Science. His research focuses mainly on efficient algorithms for structural graph properties like vertex- and edge-connectivity, planarity and geometric contraints, but also on certificates that allow to prove the existence of these structures easily. He teaches courses in Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science.

# Michael Stiebitz

Prof. Dr. Michael Stiebitz is professor for **Combinatorics/graph theory**. His field of research is structurell and algorithmic graph theory with focus on coloring problems for graphs. He gives lectures for students of mathematics, engineering sciences and students of information theory, regularly. Mainly he is holding lectures as combinatorics, game theory and information and encoding theory.

# Carsten Trunk

Prof. Dr. Carsten Trunk Carsten Trunks research focuses on the qualitative study of **differential equations and selected applications**: Differential-Algebraic equations (which appear in Chip-design), Sturm-Liouville equations (Quantum mechanics), Second order systems (Hydrodynamics) and System Theory (Byrnes-Isidori form and control). He teaches since many years students of engineering and math students.

# Karl Worthmann

Karl Worthmann is Jun.-Prof. for **ordinary differential equations**. His research interest is nonlinear systems theory with a particular focus on model predictive control. Here, the dynamical behaviour of the considered system is typically modelled by a differential equation. Then, future trajectories are predicted subject to optimization variables (inputs) in order to solve a stabilization or tracking problem. Within this field various mathematical aspects like modelling, optimization, and numerics come into play. Moreover, model predictive control is widely used in industries.
