Sensory acquisition von motivational indicators via wearables for the adaptive control of learning contents of an e-learning platform

Aims of the research project

The aim of the SensoMot project is the detection of critical motivational incidents via sensory data. Through suitable adaptation mechanisms the learning process shall be controlled in a way that it matches the learner´s motivation. Learning blocks shall be detected early on via unobtrusive, non-reactive sensors and learning contents shall be adapted accordingly. The benefit of the systems for learners shall be an efficient and deep processiing of learning contents, joy of learning and sustaining interest.

Content of the research project

With the help of wearables, in the form of fitness-trackers or smartwatches, physiological data of the learner is gathered that allows of inferences regarding psychological parameters like stress or motivation. The algorithm of the learning software executes different adaptations based on this data acquisition. As an example the learning form or the depiction of learning contents can be adapted. Learning scenarios will be developed and evaluated for university learning using the example of nano-technology and for distance learning using the example of machine engineering.

Multi-level evaluation-concept for implementing adaptations in an e-learning platform on the subject of micro- and nanotechnology

  • investigation of the change of students´ learning motivation while working with an (non-adaptive) e-learning platform in a laboratory-study with the aim of identifying critical motivational incidents, evaluation of the instructional design of the e-learning platform under motivational aspects
  • user-centered requirements elicitation for implementing the adaptivation with the aid of focus groups, prototypical implementation of different adaptive navigation-support techniques and comparative evaluation in an experimental study-setting
  • investigation of the change of students´ learning motivation while working with the final adaptive version of the e-learning platform in a laboratory-study, evaluation of the usability and user experience of the e-learning platform
