Katja Richter was awarded a doctor’s degree – Dissertation was published by Universitätsverlag Ilmenau

Katja Richter, former research assistant in the Media Psychology and Media Design Group, was awarded a doctor’s degree (Dr. phil.) on February 3rd, 2017, and has therefore successfully completed her doctoral examination procedure. Ms. Richter did her doctorate on the topic “Gesundheits-Roboter für Senior/innen: neue Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien in der alternden Gesellschaft [Health Robots for Seniors: New Information and Communication Technologies in the Aging Society]”. Her dissertation thesis was published by Universitätsverlag Ilmenau in February 2017 and is available free of charge:

Dr. Sandra Pöschl wins the CRC-Clinical Cyberpsychology New Investigator Award

Dr. Sandra Pöschl has won the Canada Research Chair (CRC) Clinical Cyberpsychology New Investigator Award 2016. The award was delivered at the Cyberpsychology, Cybertherapy and Social Networking Conference (CYPSY21) in Dun Laoghaire, Ireland, in June 2016. The award is delivered annually by Dr. Stéphane Bouchard for a conference presentation of outstanding research quality, and includes a prize money of 1,000 USD . The title of the presentation is “Virtual reality public speaking training – An experimental study on the effects of task difficulty, goal orientation, and social presence on user performance”, co-authored by Darja Schütz and Prof. Dr. Nicola Döring.

Research Group Media Psychology and Media Design at the CYPSY21

The research group will give three presentations at the CYPSY21 (Annual CyberPsychology, CyberTherapy & Social Networking Conference) from June, 27th to 30th 2016 in Dun Laoghire. Topics of the presentations are the "role of the internet for the search of health information" (Prof. Nicola Doering), "measurement of task difficulty, goal orientation, and social presence in immersive virtual realities" (Dr. Sandra Poeschl), and "psychophysiological reactions on driving simulation environments" (Anne Hoesch, M.Sc.).

Successful PhD-Project Defenses at the Research Group - Pt.2

Manuel Merz, PhD-Candidate of the research group Media Psychology and Media Design, successfully defended his PhD-Thesis entitled "Typologie von Wikipedianern: Quantitativ-empirische Querschnittsanalyse der englisch- und deutschsprachigen Wikipedia-Projekte" on Friday, 10th of February.

Successful PhD-Project Defenses at the Research Group

Katja Richter, PhD-Candidate of the research group Media Psychology and Media Design, successfully defended her PhD-Thesis entitled " Serviceroboter für SeniorInnen: Neue Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien für die alternde Gesellschaft." on Wednesday, 03rd February 2016. Yvonne Ludewig successfully defended her PhD-Thesis entitled “Entwicklung eines Roboter-Akzeptanz-Modells und -Fragebogens für die Evaluation der Nutzerakzeptanz von Service-Robotern” on Friday, 29th January 2016.

New research assistant

Dr. Rohangis Mohseni is the new research assistant since the 1st of February 2016.  He will do research and teaching. We warmly welcome him to the team!

In November 2015, Prof. Dr. Nicola Doering and Prof. Dr. Juergen Bortz with assistance of Dr. Sandra Poeschl published the 5th edition of the classical research methodology book. The new edition is renewed and revised didactically and textually. The book explains all stages of the research process from choosing research topics to publishing results. Furthermore, it deals with basics (e.g. theory of science, research ethics) and in-depth knowledge (e.g. meta-analyses, structural equation models, special characteristics of evaluation research). Kristin Probstmeyer, PhD-Candidate of the research group Media Psychology and Media Design, successfully defended her PhD-Thesis entitled: "Gendersensibilität in Lehrveranstaltungen des ingenieurwissenschaftlichen Grundlagenstudium" on Friday, 17th July 2015.

Research Group Media Psychology and Media Design at the WAS 2015 with 2 presentations 

Our team gave two presentations WAS 2015 (Congress of the World Association for Sexual Health) from July, 25th. to 28th. 2015 in Singapur: "Girls' Peer Sex Counseling in Online Discussion Forums" and "Young Lesbians' Peer Sex Education on YouTube". The results are from the funded reserach project "Girls Health Online". The article about the Online Forums won the "Top 10 Abstract Award".

Our team gave two presentations CyberPsychology, CyberTherapy and Social Networking Conference (CYPSY) 2015 from June, 29th to July, 2nd 2015 in San Diego: Measuring Co-Presence and Social Presence in Virtual Environments - Psychometric Construction of a German Scale for a Fear of Public Speaking Scenario (Dr. Sandra Pöschl) and Robotic Companions for Older People: A Case Study in the Wild (Katja Richter).

The program report "Television in Germany - program research and program discourse"(eds: die medienanstalten), which has just been published, is thematically dedicated to the different formats of sex education. One contribution is an article by Prof. Döring titled "sex on the internet - information and pornography".

Prof. Doering appointed in the expert panel of the klicksafe prize 2015 

The"klicksafe prize for safety on the Internet" award prizes to activities, projects and  campaigns that stand up for safe offers on the Internet, inform about risks and appropriate  user behavior and support media competencies. Prof. Doering appointed in the expert panel. The klicksafe prize 2015 will be awarded on June 18th, 2015 in Cologne at the award ceremony of the "Grimme Online Awards".

Research Team Media Psychology and Media Design at the DGP-Congress in Bochum

Our team gave five presentations at the DGP-Congress in Bochum with an interesting range of topics: the evaluation of trainings in immersive virtual realities, the elderly’s requirements concerning health-robots, positive effects of the human-robotics-interaction with a pilot robot, the myth of social isolation due to the use of the internet, psychological aspects of selfies.

Dr. Sandra Pöschl as Visiting Fellow at the Center for Human-Computer Interaction at Virginia Tech

Dr. Sandra Pöschl spends Februar until April 2013 as Visiting Fellowship at the Center for Human-Computer Interaction at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech).  She is part of the 3D Interaction Group (in charge of Prof. Dr. Doug Bowman). During her time abroad she is working  on a framework concerning the connections between Fidelity (hard- and softwarecharacteristics), Presence and Performance in virtual environments.

New recruitment in the research project SERROGA

Since November 1st, 2012 we welcome Katja Richter as a new employee in the research project SERROGA  at the department of media psychology and media design.

The research project "SERROGA - service robots for health assistance," is a collaborative project between the department of neuroscience and cognitive robotics and computer science and the Department of Media Psychology and Media Design. It is funded by the Thuringian Ministry of Economy, Labour and Technology and was launched on May 1st, 2012.
Aim of the
project is the development and evaluation of a "health robot" for the elderly, helping them to live independently in their own homes.

Also in this WS 2012/2013, the FG Media Psychology and Media Design give students of Applied Media and Communication Science (B.Sc.) the opportunity to school their gender and diversity competence.

Successful PhD-Project Defense at the Research Group 

Emanuel Maxl, PhD-Candidate of the research group Media Psychology and Media Design, successfully defended his PhD-Thesis entitled: “"Mobile Markt- und Sozialforschung - Methodische Qualität selbst-administrierter mobiler Forschung" (Mobile Market- and Social Research. Methodical Quality of Self-Administrated Mobile Research) on Friday, 25th November.

Participation an the 7th Conference of the Media Psychology Division


With five contributions at the 7th Conference of the Media Psychology Division (German Psychological Society) the Research Group media design and media psychology presented current research projects to an academic audience. 

During the conference, which took part in Bremen, Nadine Exner gave a talk about „LIMA - A Model that Explains Longterm Intelligent Metering Adoption.“, presenting current research results of the residens-project. Yvonne Ludewig presented results of her PhD-project under the title "Innovation in Home Improvement Stores: Summative evaluation of Usability and User Acceptance of a Mobile Shopping Robot." Likewise Tim Blumer delivered current results from his PhD-project in his presentation: "Are we the same online? Personality and Transsituational Consistency on the Internet."
Ana-Despina Tudor, master candidate at the research group Media Psychology and Media Design, gave a talk about her master thesis concerning "Nonverbal behavior of virtual humans: Representing emotions in CAVE Automatic Virtual Environments". Dr. Sandra Pöschl partcipated in the poster session with the contribution "Virtual Training for Fear of Public Speaking". Due to the great presence at the Conference of the Media Psychology Division, the Research Group media design and media psychology had the opportunity to provide insights about its different interdisciplinary research projects. Also it was very enriching for the department members to discuss they research findings in an academic setting.
