At the TU Ilmenau, a research project of the German Research Foundation was completed, in which the entire historical stock of applications of so-called designs from the GDR era was indexed and recorded in an electronic database. Design or registered design is an industrial property right that gives its owner an exclusive right of use for his goods.

In his lecture as part of the TU Ilmenau Citizens' Campus reportsDr. Christoph Hoock, head of the Thuringia State Patent Center (PATON) at the TU Ilmenau, will report on the DFG project. Together, the PATON Institute at TU Ilmenau, the university library and the former Department of Graphic Data Processing recorded some 15,000 applications for designs filed with the DDR's Office of Inventors between 1952 and 1990. Dr. Hoock describes how, starting from 200 card index boxes from the collection of the German Patent and Trademark Office in Berlin and the trademark and brand sheets from the magazine of the Thuringia State Patent Center, a database was created that is now available to design enthusiasts, industrial and economic historians, and lawyers. The collection of applications, which often include illustrations, can also be used to supplement the German Patent and Trademark Office's design register to check current design applications for novelty and uniqueness.
