Autofluorescence of the natural lens of the eye causes artifacts in fluorescence lifetime imaging ophthalmoscopy (FLIO), especially in elderly patients. Therefore, scientists of the Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Computer Science in cooperation with the University Hospital Jena investigated four hardware methods that can suppress the autofluorescence of the natural eye lens: aperture stop separation, confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopy, combination of confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopy and aperture stop separation, and dual point confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopy. The methods are compared on the basis of theoretical parameters and their effect is demonstrated by means of exemplary measurements. The best suppression is achieved by using the dual point principle. This study provides the first quantitative evaluation of hardware methods for suppression of natural lens fluorescence during retinal autofluorescence measurements.
